Seniors organise enrollment camp for Aadhaar

Senior residents of Brigade Millennium apartment complex take the initiative to organise an UID Aadhaar enrollment camp in the apartment itself.

Senior citizens of Brigade Millennium apartments took the lead to organise the much needed Aadhaar Camp in our enclave with Mayflower flat’s lobby as the venue between January 4th and 20th.

The residents, under the umbrella of ‘Elders Forum’ contacted UID officials, who pointed them to one of their contract agencies, Mars Systems. Since there were 800+ apartments, the residents found it convenient to organise a camp. Resident volunteers coordinated each block and allotted specific timings for enrollment. They could also ensure domestic help and drivers employed in the complex could register.

The UI camp was conducted in a spirit of team work by several elders of our enclave. The five apartment owners associations in the complex, provided excellent facilities including staff support to this community endeavour.

More than 1600 residents from these blocks (around 98% turnout) and some staff benefited immensely with such a facility at their doorstep.

UI enrollment centres have been opened across the city at banks and post offices. For addresses, see: appointments.uidai.gov.in/easearch.aspx

The initiative to organise such a camp came from several senior citizens of the Elders Forum, notably O P Ramaswamy, Chellappa, Sudarshanam, Nagaraj, Seetharam Pratap Kumar, Nair, Raghavan and Bhat. Professor Bhat volunteered to coordinate the programme.

The Espirit de Corps was further exemplified by N R Veguswamy aged 102, a resident of Cassia block who came for enrollment along with his son, Jayaraman aged 69, grandson Anand aged 38 and great-grandson Abhinav aged 3!

Aadhar Enrollment at Brigade Millennium.

This definitely is an unique and proud moment for all living in this enclave. Perhaps it is also a record in Bangalore. It was delight to see Venguswamy walk straight from his flat without even a walking stick and take his position behind the camera.

This act of our centenarian neighbour is a testimony to his exploits in his younger day exploit when he had to trekked all the way from Rangoon (Burma) to Calcutta in 1938, to escape being captured by the enemy forces.

Kudos to elders’ spirit.

In Mysore, I had got nearly 3200 students enrolled for Aadhaar with the help of UIDAI authorities sparing me four systems with operators. In consultation with College/School Principals of St.Philomenas, St.Josephs, St.Mathews and other colleges in Bannimantap area, systems were set up in their colleges, a staff member was entrusted with the responsibility of organisation etc. This shows that with a little initiative like this and of Brigades residents, it is possible to help the authorities to achieve their goal and also render novel and noble help to the residents who may be either hard up for time/energy to go to some remote corner for obtaining Aadhaar. A similar exercise for helping students of degree colleges to obtain Voter IDs (EPICs) was conducted and more than 4000 students from Mahajana College, Maharaja College, Yuvaraja College, JSS and other colleges were enabled with EPICs with proactive help from Election Commission officers and officials in Mysore. ECI has confirmed that they have written letters to Heads of Institutions to conduct such an exercise for helping the student community to participate in the democratic process of India. Social Activists/NGOs may also take initiative and do such exercises since without active help from the citizens, it is difficult to achieve any good progress for a good cause. While we claim citizens’ rights, we are not discharging our duties and responsibilities. Time to get involved and help the system to improve.

Mysore was selected along with other two cities for a pilot project for Aadhaar last year. UIDAI scored nearly 96 per cent enrolment. Still there were others who had not registered.

What’s behind first time voters’ lukewarm response in these hot summer elections?

Voting is every citizen's right and duty but why are young voters not enthusiastic about making a difference in the world's largest democracy?

“Just, I mean, I don’t feel like voting. This politics and all. I didn’t even apply, I think I was late,” rattled one of my students when I asked if they had all registered to vote as most of them had turned 18 one or two years ago.  This was pretty much the chorus. They spoke about how it was too late when they tried to register, how it was so difficult (which was promptly rejected by those who had done it), how they were in a different city, how they were not interested in politics and how it was…

Low voter turnout in Bengaluru: Citizens highlight discrepancies in electoral rolls

Bengaluru recorded a voter turnout of 57.43%. Voters reported issues like deletions, duplications and names of deceased voters in the electoral rolls.

Almost half of Bengaluru's citizens did not vote in the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections. The city recorded a 57.43% voter turnout this year, not much of an improvement from the previous 2019 elections. The low voter turnout has often been ascribed to apathy, but this alone is not a satisfactory explanation. Several factors have been cited for the low voter turnout, from discrepancies in electoral rolls to the scorching heat. Voter roll errors: Deletions, duplications and deceased names There were complaints that hundreds of voter names were either deleted or missing in Chickpet and Akkipet in Bangalore Central.  In a…
