Garbage continues to be one of the biggest challenges in our city and can only be addressed by managing waste in a decentralised manner. More households should manage their waste ‘at source’ through home composting while the rest can be managed at a neighbourhood level. It is clear that with this degree of decentralisation, only a meager 5-10% of our waste would go to landfills.

What is the key missing piece in this puzzle? Citizen Awareness.
One such great initiative looking to solve this problem is ‘SwachaGraha Kalika kendra’ a composting learning center. It is a first-of-its-kind project in India, located in HSR Park in Bengaluru, housing more than 20 composting models including a fully-functional Biogas unit. Besides gaining greater knowledge of composting and its benefits, the Learning Centre visitors would also get a chance to explore a multitude of home-gardening solutions. It is without a doubt the beginning of a very unique and impactful experience – an impending landmark for the garden city of Bengaluru.
This first Learning Center will be inaugurated by M Satish Reddy, MLA, Bommanahalli on December 15th, 2018.
SwachaGraha – Start a green spot (www.SwachaGraha.in) is a citywide citizen awareness campaign started in 2016 to promote composting across the city. The idea is to partner with citizen groups, policy makers and BBMP to advocate for decentralisation of waste management and to create learning centers across all the MLA constituencies for a truly hands-on experience.
Throughout the last six years, HSR Layout has been leading a variety of waste management initiatives, primarily driven by HSR Citizen Forum (a group of active residents) and immensely supported by their MLA and BBMP. Now this team with the MLA’s support are pioneering the implementation of the first composting learning center in Bangalore. From information sessions for volunteers to captivating educational workshops for students, ‘SwachaGraha Kalika Kendra’ is expected to grow into a unique waste management knowledge hub.
