The panic of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) seems to be here to stay for a while. According to the statistics of the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Sciences Department (AHVSD), 31 cattle in Bangalore have died (of which 10 deaths are in Bangalore rural and 21 in Bangalore urban), while 90 cattle in rural Bangalore are affected and 316 in urban Bangalore are affected. In Karnataka state- 8212 cattle are affected, of which 857 have died, as on September 29, 2013. While this disease does not affect humans, they could be the carriers. The residents of Puttenahalli in J P Nagar 7th phase are worried about the increasing noise pollution in the vicinity and the lethargic attitude of Karnataka State Pollution Control Board officials. They are also living in fear, not willing to come out of their safe closets and complain openly. Reason: Herbivorous Safari will be closed for at least next seven weeks as Foot and Mouth Disease has broken out. This year seems to have been a slightly eco-friendly Ganapati festival, claimed various press releases from BBMP and Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB). Many incidents in the city in the past have proven that the fire emergencies in Bangalore do not get timely help. As the city saturates, the worry of fire and emergencies also mounts, because of the increasing skyscrapers and congested areas. While everybody else in the city were busy celebrating Ganesh Chaturthi last weekend, 73-year-old Sakuntala Narasimhan, who writes the column Civic Reflections for Citizen Matters, had a different task to do. Karthik, a 12-year-old boy, studying in Class 5 at Sacred Children School and PU College, was trampled to death by a tusker on 9 September, 2013. The incident took place in Doddamaranahalli, near Tavarekere, which is around 23 kms from City centre. According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred when Karthik went too close to the tusker to get a better glimpse in the morning.
