NBF and Vibgyor parents launch ‘Child Safe Bengaluru’ campaign

Parents of VIBGYOR school reiterate the demand for justice, fast and fair investigation to get the truth out, punishment to all those involved, immediate suspension of the principal, vice-principal, grade one coordinator and the class teacher, credible and accountable authority to replace the existing management of the school.

Namma Bengaluru Foundation, in association with a group of parents of Vibgyor school has launched a campaign to make Bangalore safer children.

The campaign called “Child Safe Bengaluru,” aims at adequate preventive and corrective measures that will ensure safety to every child in the schools of the city. The activities aim to include, effective participation of the Departments of Government such as Education, Transport, Police, Judiciary, Children, Parents, Schools, Media, Elected officials, Policy Makers and various NGOs in ensuring that child protection, child welfare and child rights are effectively controlled and measured.

The initiative has already garnered positive impact, with parents of many schools in Bangalore expressing interest to join hands with Namma Bengaluru Foundation to ensure child safety.

“Our earnest effort will be to ensure that every child of Bangalore will be safe in the school that he or she studies in. For this, a constant vigilant mechanism that needs to be put in place will be the Foundation’s effort, with the help of both government and private schools. We will also review the existing mechanisms like FIR registration, Criminal Investigation, Medical Examination, Legal proceedings and Media Coverage to help the Govt make them more child friendly and effective. We look forward to more parents and schools to become part of this initiative, and create a new mandate towards child safety,” says, Sridhar Pabbisetty, CEO – Namma Bengaluru Foundation.

NBF will set up a citywide “Parent Association Federation” that will oversee issues related to Child Sex abuse in the city with a larger focus of making school environments safer and also to enlarge the mandate of Parent Teacher Associations of different schools to include safety and security aspects of running the school. The foundation is also petitioning the government to set up a National Child Sex Offenders Registry and is demanding amendments to the POCSO by making educational institutions accountable.

“Schools are caretakers of the next generation of our country. Children trust teachers more than their parents. Such a heinous crime should not occur anywhere – even more so at a school. This heinous crime beckons schools, government, police, bureaucracy and parents to get together for two large causes. The parents are keen on a transparent, fast and fair investigation to be undertaken and all the culprits punished” a sentiment echoed by parent of a child studying in VIBGYOR school in the city.

Re-iteration of demand for justice

Parents of VIBGYOR reiterate the demand for justice, and press for immediate actions as stated below:

  1. Fast and fair investigation to get the real truth out and punishment to all those involved in the heinous crime
  2. Immediate removal of those accountable for the safety of children at school. We demand that the principal, vice-principal, grade one coordinator and the class teacher be immediately put under suspension
  3. We want a credible and accountable authority to replace the existing management of the school.
