Sarakki Lake too gets residents to champion its cause

With a group of local residents driving an initiative to save Sarakki Lake, perhaps there is hope yet for the much-polluted and encroached water body.

This information was shared by the members of the newly-formed Sarakki Lake Area Improvement Trust.

We are pleased to announce a new voluntary, non-profit trust – Sarakki Lake Area Improvement Trust (Regd). The Trust will help restore and rejuvenate the once pristine Sarakki Lake (also known as Jaraganahalli Lake) which has fallen prey to unprecedented encroachment, pollution by entry of untreated sewage from surrounding layouts, uncontrolled growth of water hyacinth and the consequent disappearance of birds and fishes.

We want to spread awareness of the consequences if Sarakki Lake were to disappear, work with the agencies responsible for restoration and rejuvenation and monitor the works. As a “neighbourhood watchdog” the trust will ensure effective measures to restore the lake and its surroundings.

The founder trustees and office bearers are experienced professionals from diverse fields and come from a wide cross section of the neighbouring communities.

We have noticed lorries entering the lake area and dumping debris thereby reducing lake area. With BDA now in charge of the lake, we have requested them to use stone blocks temporarily to prevent vehicles entering the area.

Sarakki Lake is very large (68 acres as per a BBMP survey, 2009) and requires lot of work to rejuvenate. We request everybody to be a part of this community initiative. As a first step, we request you to keep a watch and report any harmful or illegal activities.

    This is great news!
I was planning to write to our corporator and also talk to her personally.
Thanks for taking up this and saving the lake.
I am also very much interested in this.
    I live in Jaraganahalli.

So, please let me know, how to join this effort?

    Thanks,
    Narendra

This is one of the very large water bodies that we have in Bangalore.
The lake should be cleaned up, encroachment should be cleared and fenced.
After that, a walkers track should be built. Even fun activity such as boating can be introduced, which will attract lot of people – that can fetch very good revenue to BBMP, which should be more than sufficient to maintain this lake!

let fun activities to be left for amusement parks, lets clean the lake
