Not to be confused with the Latin-American dance form, a salsa is a kind of spicy sauce popular in Mexican cuisine. The basic ingredients consist of chopped fresh tomatoes, green chilies, coriander, onions, lime juice and sometimes even capsicum.
Ideal for the Indian palate, salsas are now a popular dish at most parties and can be served as dips for chips or as a salad. The most popular salsas are the tomato salsa, but there are many varieties like the cucumber salsa, bean salsa (cooked pulses mixed with the basic ingredients), tomato+ cucumber salsa and such. Salsas need not be restricted to just vegetables or pulses, you can even make it with fruits! Serve a mango salsa or a watermelon salsa at the next party you throw and you’ll have the guests coming back for more. You can mix two fruits together or make a vegetable-fruit combo. Just use your imagination and you can dish out infinite number of salsa combos!
Here’s the recipe for a quick and delicious Mango Salsa:
Fresh Mango Salsa: Serves 2
- Mango:1 peeled and cubed
- Onion: ½ small (finely chopped)
- Tomato: ½ (finely chopped)
- Coriander leaves: 2tbsp (finely chopped)
- Lime juice: 1 tsp
- Green chilies: ½ (finely chopped)
- Salt: to taste
- Mix all the ingredients together in a bowl.
- Chill before serving.
You can substitute mango with any other fruit (strawberry, pineapple, grapes etc) or vegetable of your choice to make a salsa fresca or you can add an Indian twist to the recipe by adding some chaat masala to it and call it a “Salsa Chaat”!!⊕
