The taste of Maharashtra

Experience the unexplored variety of fast food dishes which give us the feel of Mumbai at Rajvardhan Food, Jayanagar .

Bangalore is home not only to exotic cuisines from all around the world, but also to a variety of khana from diffferent Indian states. However, amidst all the dhaba-esque Punjabi restaurants and the ubiquitous Andhra-style eateries, the cuisine of Maharashtra is not adequately represented.

Let’s face it, apart from a couple of really well known dishes like Vada Pav (which I believe is India’s answer to the Burger) and Pav Bhaji (which now has a cult following thanks to the roadside vendors), most of us are unaware of the dishes so dearly loved by the Marathi population. Rajvardhan Foods is a rare exponent of the unexplored variety of fast food dishes which give us the feel of Amchi Mumbai.

Situated in a small lane close to the gargantuan Big Bazaar and Bangalore Central malls in Jayanagar 9th block, this tiny fast-food outlet is easy to miss.

However, those whose know about this restaurant, frequently flock it. The crowd at times so dense that it exposes the shortage of tables present in this restaurant. The service is a bit on the slower side owing to the fact that all the dishes are freshly prepared. This place is known for its value for money, as a sumptuous snack would cost you around Rs 50-70.

Many people believe that this restaurant offers the best Vada Pav(spicy potato cutlet stuffed in between two pieces of toasted bun) in Bangalore. Sabudana Vada (cutlet made out of Tapioca pearls) is also a must-try dish. Other noteworthy dishes include Thalipeeth (multi-grain spicy pancake), Misal Pav (Bun with curry made out tamarind and sprouts) and Shrikand Poori (Pooris served with a sweet dish made out of strained yoghurt). This is also one of the few places which offers a couple of dishes, such as Upavasa Thalipeeth and Sabudana Khichidi which can be consumed even when one is fasting. All these dishes are served with tamarind chutney or curd. These snacks are complemented well by drinks such as Cocum Sharbath and Kairi Panna.

To try these dishes out head to Rajvardhan foods and experience the authentic taste of the delectable Maharasthrian cuisine.  ⊕

Mumbai’s invisible beaches: A photo-story

Mumbai's shoreline may be famous for iconic beaches like Juhu and Girgaum but there's much more to it, says a city photographer.

Once a year, I inadvertently overhear someone wondering aloud about the sea level while crossing the Mahim or Thane Creek bridges without realising that the sea has tides. Similar conversations are heard at the beaches too. The Bandra Worli Sea Link, which now features in almost every movie about Mumbai, as seen from Mahim. People regularly throng the sea-fronts of Mumbai - sometimes the beaches, sometimes the promenades, but…

While men and women indulge in healthy competition during a game of Ultimate Frisbee in Chennai, there are various power dynamics at play.

A little white disc flies through the air; chased by many, and caught deftly by a girl, who then sends it whizzing across the sandy shore. This is a scene that often unfolds along Chennai's Besant Nagar beach, next to the red police booth. The vast, open space afforded by the beach sets the stage for a fun sport, involving a 175g white disc. Ultimate Frisbee is fast-paced, involving seven players from each team on opposite sides of the field, throwing the disc to each other, racing to catch it and passing it along to teammates. The most popular format…
